I hiked the normal Crow Pass trail, up and over the pass. At this
point, with the Raven Glacier behind me, I left the trail and
proceeded to cross about 1.5 miles on the side of a steep hill. I
was walking along at 3200' when I noticed a big black bear coming
right for me, about 300 yards off. I did the old "Hey Bear!"
and got his attention. He stopped and watched me, so I thought I
would be better off if I was uphill of him, but he also started
uphill. So I dropped about 300' and kept on with the "Hey
Bear!" and we avoided each other by a good 100 yards. It was
very cool, but a little unnerving, since the only defense I had
was a knife in the event he thought of me as an easy dinner.
